Just two little words! If and Only … just small little words that by themselves don’t really mean that much.
[if] is a conjunction and can mean in case that, even though, or whether.
[on·ly] can be an adverb meaning alone; solely, or merely…or it can be an adjective meaning being the single one of the kind. It can also be a conjunction meaning but.
Granted, only has more meaning than does the word if, but when you put the two words together, they become pretty powerfully full of regret. They become full of unfulfilled desires. They almost seem to ring with broken dreams. Say them to yourself and listen to what you feel when you say them. If Only…
We all have “if only’s” in our lives. Sometimes our if only is very simple….”if only I wouldn’t have gone back for that 3rd piece of pizza” or “if only those kids would stop banging that stick on the fence”…little annoyances that we really can live with.
Sometimes our “if only’s go a little deeper and are more like…”if only I had not wasted so much time today, I would already be done with this job”, or “if only I had stopped to help that turtle cross the street he wouldn’t be in danger of getting hurt”.
However, sometimes our “if only’s” goes down deep inside of our hearts and seem to touch our very soul…”if only that relationship had worked out”, or “if only that drunk person hadn’t gotten into the driver’s seat”, or “if only I had spent more time with my children and family”, or “If only he/she had loved me”. “If Only….” can leave us feeling empty and hopeless if we choose to live our lives in the past. But everyday is a chance to start over, to change the past…to start anew.
2 Cor. 4:17 says “Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.”
Lamentations 3:22-23 says “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an end, they are new every morning, great is Your faithfulness.”
Today my “If only” was kinda silly. As I type this I’m sitting in the auto repair shop waiting for my windshield wipers to be fixed and the “if only” that keeps going through my head is “if only cars never broke down and had to be repaired….if only they could repair themselves…and….if only it didn’t cost any money to get them fixed.” 😉
