Progress in the 850 life….

I really can’t wait until I’m showing you pictures of my garden actually growing and producing veges & fruit….but it is a process and for now….and for now, it’s still a cleanup process!! Yesterday I spent a lot of time outside cleaning up my garden and getting it ready to be rototiled. I feel like I made a lot of progress in at least getting the junk up (old plastic from the walkway area that was meant to keep the weeds out…never really worked! and the cloth liner I’d put down to keep the weeds out of the planted area…that worked really well! But it all has to come up to rototil and make the garden area funtional again. Plus the railroad ties were really old and beginning to rot, so time to replace those as well. I need help with that though, they’re too heavy for me :P.

Here’s my progress so far:

All that’s left is those railroad ties and then Matt & his grandpa can rototil 🙂

Today Kelso was my helper (taking pictures):

Yesterday Jazmin was my helper 🙂

🙂

I also cleaned up the front of the house and planted some pansies and violas in my pots 🙂

That’s it for today….now I have to go do all that indoor cleaning that I put off yesterday 😦 . I’m glad I chose yesterday to be outside though, it was a beautiful, sunny day…today is cloudy and a little dreary!

I’m ready for spring because I’m itching to grow something…anything!! I love pansies! I’ll probably put some of those in the pots on my front porch once it’s warm enough up here. I’d also like to start an herb garden. I’ll probably have to do that in pots. When you grow cilantro do you grow it from seed? Maybe I should start some herbs from seed indoors now so they’ll be ready to put outside in a few weeks…

Hey Beth…I hardly ever start anything from seed (except my grapefruite tree) just because I don’t really have the room in my little house to have pots growing all over the place with grow lights. I always buy the little potted plants when they come out. Cilantro from the garden is absolutely heavenly….the smell, the taste…amazing! But then everything from the garden is amazing!

This year I think I’ll grow Cilantro, dill, rosemary, perhaps some parsley, and I’ll try to find a spice that is unusual … or that I’ve never grown before, like tumeric or something… 🙂

I can’t wait. You know that pansies can handle the cold…how cold is it up there?

It’s been as low as the teens and we’ve had snow lately. Most of the time it’s in the 30s right now. Can they handle that much cold?

  3. Victoria says:

Well, according to this article http://gardening.lohudblogs.com/2007/04/05/pansies-can-take-the-cold/ they can take temperatures in the teens…I don’t know how long though.

I’ll have to check and see if they’re selling them locally right now. If so, I just might plant some and put them on the porch. I can always cover them if it gets too cold.
